WORKSHOP #5 - Become a Local Household Name, Here's How!

Do you want hundreds of thousands to millions of streams while spending $0 on marketing and promoting your song? Of course you do. Who wouldn’t?

Well I want to share something with you that has helped countless artists achieve that, many of which I have personally seen grow from having a very little following to becoming local household names.

This workshop will provide you steps on how you can do that too, and as always, we’re here to help you along the journey, answering any questions you have, or providing guidance where necessary.

The key is to write songs about local and prominent organizations in your city, such as your city’s sports team (which from what I have seen has been the most successful).

So why does this work? People love to feel included, whether that be apart of a group, a club or affiliation. By writing a song about something that locals can relate to (such as their city), you’re including them.

This is something close to them as it is about the city they live in, the city they grew up in, the city they love, the sports team they visited with their parents, etc and so they will not only listen but share the song around, as it is something they are passionate about.

As much as it is a song you will written, it is something everyone within the city will feel proud of, as if it is their own. The whole city or affiliation will get behind it and ultimately do the marketing and promoting for you.

With that being said, there are several things to keep in mind and include in the song. Here is what we have gathered by analyzing artists that have successfully used this technique.

1 - You Need to Create a Music Video

It is much easier for people to relate to something when there are visuals that relate to the song. In this case, visuals of the city, the organization or whatever else you are writing about.

For example, have you ever seen your city in a movie and been like, woah that’s my city, so cool to see it acknowledged globally?

It is that same feeling that people will have when they see their city or an organization they associate themselves with, in the music video.

They will feel proud and more-likely to share it around.

2 - Include the Community in the Music Video

Including prominent figures such as the mayor, sports figures and other local public figures is one great way, but don’t worry if you cannot get them to physically appear.

There are probably tons of videos of them online that you can use in the video (just make sure you have their permission, necessary rights, and other legal permission).

Also, in addition to public figures, get everyday community members that are passionate about the city or organization in the video too. Once again, they do not have to physically be there.

Get them on Zoom calls, get them to send in videos, etc.

3 - Show You’re Passionate about the organization/city

Showing that you’re passionate about the organization and/or city is one determining factor in whether this project will be a success or not. If you're not genuine, it will come across in the video.

One way to show you're truly passionate is by wearing the team’s jersey (if the song is about a local sports organization).

4 - Write Lyrics that Show the Good Sides or the Vision of what is to Come

People love a feel good story and so write about some positive aspect of the organization or city that people can feel happy about and proud to get behind.

As an example, writing about politics may not be great, because while you will get strong followers that support it, whenever something divisive is brought up, you will also get extreme haters.

That's not the goal of this project. For this music video, you can write about and bring in future stars on the team, or future developments coming to the city.

The lyrics about the vision is ultimately used to hype up the organization or city, once again leading people to feel proud and therefore more likely to share it around.

5 - Unite the community by “Fighting” Against or For Something

The last tip and probably one of the most important is to unite the organization or city by having them fight against someone or something.

For example, if you’re writing about your local sports team, unite the community by saying something along the lines of, it’s us fighting against every other team for the trophy.

You’re the songwriter so I’ll leave that up to you.
