4 Tips to Overcoming Stage Fright

Updated: Jul 11, 2022

1. Prepare / Practice

I know you already know this, but before you skip past it, really focus on it. Do not practice until you're good to go, practice until it comes so natural to you that you can think of something else in your mind and still perform your best. If you practice until you can do it, that makes you good, but if you practice until you do not mess up, that's what makes you great! Put in the time, put in the effort and it will all pay off. There are no short cuts to success.

2. Be Honest with Yourself (what's the worst that can happen?)

Mistakes happen and I know you do not want to forget lyrics, embarrass yourself, or have something else happen to you on stage that you're not prepared for, but realistically ask yourself, "What's the Worst That Can Happen?" Let's look at an example including Harry Styles. Harry is one of the most loved Singers around the world, and guess what? He FORGETS LYRICS all the Time! Don't believe me? Click here for ten times he forget them. Not just that, Harry also has a history of being embarrassed on stage, a Big History! I know you don't believe me again, so click here to see his pants get pulled down while performing or here to see him fall on stage MULTIPLE times when performing.

The constant in all the clips is the Crowd Loving It! The same will happen if one of these instances or something similar happens to you. It shows you're only human, something we can all relate to and so everyone will join in and support you!

3. Positive Self Talk

This is such a big are of focus which you can use beyond your stage fright fear to help you with other aspects of your music, such as your confidence. Tell yourself you can and will do it. Tell yourself you were meant to perform on stage. Tell yourself you will achieve your dreams. This is the truth! What you're focusing on is lies, which haters told you. Haters only hate for 2 reasons, 1) they're jealous of you and 2) they know they will not achieve their own dreams, so they try and drag you down with them. Don't believe their lies, believe the truth, which is You Will Succeed!

4. Shift Your Focus (Instead of fearing making a mistake, focus on Your Love of Music)

Why are you focusing on the fear of the unknown of what could hypothetically happen (which simply just won't), when you could be focusing on your love for music, your passion for performing and your goal to inspire? Your time is valuable, use it to hone in on what makes you happy, not what makes you anxious.
