BIO:
Craig Alvin is a 2x Grammy award winning audio engineer (for his engineering work on Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour in 2019) based in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
His recording and mix credits include Hanson, Little Big Town, Amy Grant, Vanessa Carlton, The Features, Andrew Belle, Brittany Howard, and many more.
Needed to Get Started:
1 - Multitrack audio files (stems)
- Export each track individually, not a stereo bounce
WAV or AIFF, 24-bit (32-bit float is fine too)
Same sample rate as the session (don’t convert unless asked)
Every file should start at the same timestamp (usually bar 1 / 0:00), even if there’s silence
Examples:
Kick.wav
SnareTop.wav
BassDI.wav
AcousticGtr_L.wav
LeadVox.wav
BGV_Harmony1.wav
2 - Session tempo & time info
BPM
Time signature
Any tempo changes or odd bars (this matters a lot for automation and delays)
3 - Rough mix
Super important. This tells Craig:
Your balance
Vibe
Effects direction
Even a phone-exported bounce is better than nothing
Strongly Recommended
4 - Track notes
A simple text or email is fine:
“Lead vocal up front, intimate”
“Drums should feel dry and punchy”
“Delay throw on the word ‘fire’ in chorus 2”
“BGVs tucked, wide, dreamy”
Think intent, not instructions.
5 - Reference tracks
1–3 songs that capture:
Overall tone
Vocal level
Low-end vibe
6 - Clearly labeled folders
Example:/Song Title – Mix Files /Audio /Rough Mix MixNotes.txt
Optional (but helpful)
8 - Printed effects (if intentional)
If a sound relies on a specific effect, print it and
- Include a dry version just in case
- label clearly:
- LeadVox_Dry.wav
- LeadVox_DelayPrint.wav
PLEASE DO NOT:
- Normalize or limit tracks
- Put master bus processing on stems
- Export MP3s
- Leave clicks, pops, or unintentional distortion without warning/explanation
Turnaround time: ~10 days
